THE RESCISSION PACKAGE -- next action: HOUSE FLOOR VOTE
    The rescission package, passed by House Appropriation Committee, now
awaits a final vote of the full House.  The ALERTS FOLDER contains various

TODAY 
    Starting today the House Agriculture Committee will begin marking up
Food Stamps legislation (this is Title V of the Personal Responsibility
Act). The markup will begin at 9:30 in 1300 Longworth House Office

EVENTS YESTERDAY
    In Washington, DC the Association of Community Organizations for Reform
Now (ACORN) held a demonstration at lunchtime at the annual meeting of the
National Association of Counties to protest Congressional action to cut the
school lunch program and send the money to the state as block grants.  Rep.
Newt Gingrich (GA) was scheduled to speak at the luncheon, which was
cancelled as a result of the protest.

PICK ON PORK YOUR OWN SIZE
    Yesterday, groups from the left, right and center came out to attack
"Corporate Pork."  The centrist Progressive Policy Institute (PPI)
(202/547-0001)  released a list of $265 billion in cuts to corporate pork
over the next five years.   The conservative Cato Institute (202/842-0200)
endorsed the PPI proposals and came out with a list of $86 billion in cuts
to corporate pork.
