Sound techniques of environmental risk management require a close=20 integration of knowledge from the physical and biological sciences and=20 related disciplines such as engineering technologies on the one hand and=20 from the social sciences on the other. This is because physical, biological= =20 and ecological processes and social, economic and political practices,=20 combine to determine the structure of environmental hazards. Furthermore,=20 social perceptions of risk differ widely and decision makers need to=20 appreciate these variations when formulating regulatory policy. The issues= =20 of how to assess risk, who should assess risk and how to redistribute risk= =20 exposure, pose important questions for democratic societies. The disciplinary specialism and particular focus for the research to be=20 conducted by the Ove Arup Fellow are open. Candidates with a background from= =20 either the physical and biological sciences and related disciplines or from= =20 the social sciences are encouraged to apply.
