Further Particulars

The Oxford Centre for the Environment, Ethics and Society proposes to elect=
=20
a post-doctoral fellow to carry out research in the area of environmental=20
risk assessment, risk perception and risk management.

Sound techniques of environmental risk management require a close=20
integration of knowledge from the physical and biological sciences and=20
related disciplines such as engineering technologies on the one hand and=20
from the social sciences on the other. This is because physical, biological=
=20
and ecological processes and social, economic and political practices,=20
combine to determine the structure of environmental hazards. Furthermore,=20
social perceptions of risk differ widely and decision makers need to=20
appreciate these variations when formulating regulatory policy. The issues=
=20
of how to assess risk, who should assess risk and how to redistribute risk=
=20
exposure, pose important questions for democratic societies.

The disciplinary specialism and particular focus for the research to be=20
conducted by the Ove Arup Fellow are open. Candidates with a background from=
=20
either the physical and biological sciences and related disciplines or from=
=20
the social sciences are encouraged to apply. The successful applicant will=
=20
be expected to display a commitment to a multi-disciplinary approach to=20
environmental risk, and to exploring methods to encourage the fruitful=20
collaboration of natural and social scientists in measuring environmental=
 risk.=20

The post will be funded for a period of three years starting in October 1995=
=20
and is being sponsored by the Ove Arup Foundation. The Ove Arup Foundation=
=20
was established in 1989 to commemorate Sir Ove Arup the founder of the Ove=
=20
Arup Partnership. Its objectives are the advancement of education, directed=
=20
towards the promotion, furtherance and dissemination of knowledge of matters=
=20
associated with the built environment.

The Oxford Centre for the Environment, Ethics and Society is a=20
multi-disciplinary research institute established at Mansfield College,=20
Oxford and dedicated to exploring the social aspects of environmental=20
questions. The heart of the Centre=92s work is a focus on human values - on=
=20
ethics in the broadest sense of the term.=20

Salary for the post will be in the range =A3 (pound sterling) 17,007 to=
 20,133=20
per annum. Membership of the Universities Superannuation Scheme is=20
available. There will be a modest sum available for travel and research=20
expenses. The person appointed will be a member of the Mansfield College=20
Senior Common Room, with dining rights at the College.
