The GPI is the feature story in the October 1995 _Atlantic Monthly_. It's blasted all over the front cover. The article is authored by the Redefining Progress people. Their address is 116 New Montgomery, Suite 209, SF CA 94105. 415-543-6511. The report they send out contains biographies of the principals at the end. The _Atlantic Monthly_ article is very good. cmoore Previous message Date: Thu, 28 Sep 1995 14:42:48 -0700 Reply-to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Doug Henwood) Subject: [PEN-L:571] GDP -> GPI Today's (9/28) Financial Times has an article about a new measure of material well-being in the US, the Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI), computed by the California-based group, Redefining Progress. (No city is given, but their phone number is area code 415, so that means Bay Area.) It adjusts per capita GDP for depletion of natural resources, crime, divorce (negatively, I assume), pollution, household and volunteer work, income distribution, and other things. Unsurprisingly, it finds a persistent decline in GPI since the early 1970s. Among the 400 economists who've endorsed the initiative are Herbert Simon, Robert Eisner, and Alvin Toffler (is he an economist? the FT says so). I've ordered the original report, but haven't gotten it yet. In the meantime, anyone know anything about this group or its indicator?
