COSATU DECLARES INDEPENDENCE FROM AFL-CIO After a dispute with the African American Labor Center -- which is run by the AFL-CIO but funded mainly by the U.S. government -- the South African labor federation COSATU refused to send a representative to October's AFL-CIO convention. COSATU was angered at what it regarded as AALC's attempt to dictate its policy. After COSATU adopted a resolution opposing the U.S. economic boycott of Cuba, an AALC representative told COSATU that the resolution was not acceptable and demanded that it be rescinded. In response, COSATU decided to suspend all relations with the AFL-CIO until the American federation acknowledges the South African federation's right to run its own affairs. -- Labor Notes
