Brian Hanly asks: >A post on a business ethics list in Canada claimed that welfare has >been abolished for the poor (but not for the rich?) in Wisconsin. >Is this true? The list exaggerates somewhat; however, the public welfare system in Wisconsin is changing substantially. The changes have to do with mandatory work, job training, and time limits. I can't recall if the new system: W2 (for Wisconsin Works, we were settled by Protestants you see) abolishes AFDC or not. As for the other claim, corporate welfare is alive and well. A new sales tax district was established to pay for a new stadium for Milwaukee Brewers, and public funds were appropriated for the construction. At the same time, aids to mass transit and assisted living for the infirm were cut. Go figure. Bill Humphries
