Doug, I think you'll find that there has been 
a large and increasing amount of emigration of 
young people from Ireland to Britain, other 
European countries, and of course, the USA 
during the period you cite.  Ireland is also
a recipient of a relatively large per capita
EC subsidies and aid of various kinds.  But I 
don't have figures for either factor.
