Just in case you deleted the notice of events sponsored by the Union for
Radical Political Economics at the January ASSA meetings, I post them once
again. An updated list of sessions will be posted next week.
These events are open to anyone interested. So, even if you're not
an URPE member but you'd like to mingle with the radicals,
come join us.

URPE at ASSA - Events
In the cold of January, what better place to visit than the Washington
Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C.? "Why?" the uninitiated may ask.
Because that is the location of all of URPE's sessions at the January
6-8, 1995 meetings of the Allied Social Science Association are to
be held. Three highlights of the weekend are: the URPE-AEA joint
session on Friday afternoon, the URPE plenary on Friday night,
and the URPE reception at Childe Harold's restaurant on Saturday night.

On Friday at 2:30pm, URPE and the AEA have brought together a panel to
engage in debate on "The Employment Impact of Clinton Administration
Welfare Policies."

Later that evening, at 8:00pm, the URPE plenary will present two
speakers on "Progressive Economic Policy with the World Economy:
The Case of South Africa". Our speakers are Mzwanele Mayakiso,
who has worked for years in grassroots groups in South Africa,
and Lisa McGowan, of the Development Gap. The Development Gap is
a member of the "50 years is enough" international grassroots campaign to
radically change the structure of international lending.
Instead of feeling powerless in the face of international capital mobil
ity and conditionality of lending policies, these people and the
organizations they represent are in the forefront of building
progressive economic policy.

Last - but NOT least - get ready to party on Saturday night, from
7:00pm to ??? The place to be for URPE's reception is Childe
Harold restaurant, second floor. It's at 1610 20th St., NW, one
half block north of the Q St. exit of the Dupont Circle Metro stop
(Red Line). Music, food, drinks (cash bar), and - if conditions
degenerate sufficiently - dancing!

The URPE at ASSA organizers at American University want to thank the
chairs for sharing in the work of getting the sessions organized.
In this 100% volunteer effort, we depend on all participants to
help get things done. Thanks also goes to the many faculty, staff,
and graduate students at American University who have helped plan
sessions, and stuff and address envelopes.

For all participants and other URPE members, URPE's newsletter is on
its way to your mailbox with the list of sessions. See you in January.
