LBBS, short for Left On-line, is a new bulletin board system
co-sponsored by a diverse (and daily growing) consortium of progressive
periodicals and organizations. The current co-sponsors include Z
Magazine, South End Press, the Nation, Dollars and Sense, Socialist
Review, Democratic Socialists of America, Committees of Correspondence,
NACLA, the Institute for Policy Studies, In These Times, Monthly Review,
the Left Business Observer, URPE, NCIPA, The Campaign for a New
Tomorrow, Project South, the Gay Community News, and more.

The File libraries contain articles, archives from some writers, etc.

The LBBS also offers polls and Questionaires, teleconferencing, Internet
E-Mail connectivity, some Internet Usenet group hook-ups, online help,
etc. LBBS Now offers *World*Wide*Web* access to its members as well.

Best of all, the LBBS features QwkMail so that you can participate in a
wide array of forums and yet do all your reading and writing offline,
never having to hunt for anything, read any messages, or write any
messages -- whether E-Mail or for Forums -- while the meter is clicking.
Just connect, download your new E-Mail and all new messages in any
forums in your personal list of forums to monitor, and get off. It
happens in one swoop, no searching. Then read your material. Write any
replies you want to send off. And any new messages. Connect. Upload your
reply file and it distributes automatically. Again, one swoop, no
searching.

Left On Line is a continuous town meeting of the progressive community
-- a democratic and participatory means for discussing everything from
economics to movies, sexism to foreign policy, science to health,
philosophy to music. It is a place for varied constituencies, all
committed to social change to attain justice and peace to meet and work
through ideas and agendas. And it offers many services as a bonus.

Misc.activism.progressive (MAP) is a co-sponsor of LBBS. To join, send:

(1) A check for $25 made out to "LBBS" (care of MAP, to me at Harel
Barzilai, 112 Sapsucker Woods Rd #1A, Ithaca NY 14850)

(2)Your preferred User Name
(3)Your preferred Password
(4)Your name, full address, and phone number

(5)The software you use -- Mac, Windows, or DOS.

You will receive, free, a detailed manual, and communications and
QwkMail software. You get your first two hours of use prepaid as
well. Thereafter the costs vary depending on what part of the country
you are calling from, or whether you telnet (to lbbs.org) -- $4 per
hour or less.

Because of QwkMail, once you learn the system most calls, even
for users monitoring many forums, are under 10 minutes. It is therefore
possible to have very extensive participation in both E-Mail use and Forum
reading and writing and to periodically download some files as well,
all at a very low monthly charge in the single dollars.

Now is the time to join. By the end of spring, the system will have
been upgraded to an even snazzier format, and a major offering of LOLU
(Left Online University; email [EMAIL PROTECTED] for information
on this past fall's offering and more about LOLU) is being planned for
summer '96.
