 Actually, the U.S. was more "culturally diverse" prior to the great
European influx between 1870-WWI. Indeed, in many (if not most) Southern
states the African population ranged from 35-50%. Nationally, African
Americans were about 20% of the U.S. population (compared to about 12.5%
today).
