BLS DAILY REPORT, TUESDAY, APRIL 30, 1996

RELEASED TODAY:  On a seasonally adjusted basis, the Employment Cost Index
rose 0.7 percent in the December-March period, compared with 0.8 percent in
the September-December period.  ECI wages and salaries rose 1.0 percent in
the December-March period, up from 0.7 percent in the September-December
period.  Benefit costs decreased 0.1 percent for the quarter compared with
an increase of 1.0 percent for the September-December quarter.  Compensation 

costs for civilian workers (not seasonally adjusted) increased 3.0 percent
for the year ended in March 1996, about the same as the 2.9 percent increase 

for the year ended in March 1995 ....

Fatalities on the job in 1994 rose above 1993 numbers, while the national
injury rate decreased slightly, according to a new report released by the
AFL-CIO ....The report, "Death on the Job:  The Toll of Neglect," was issued 

in conjunction with activities commemorating Worker Memorial Day on April
28.  Using BLS data, it included state-by-state profiles of worker safety
and health conditions with information on workplace fatalities, injuries,
illnesses, the number and frequency of workplace inspections, penalties, and 

public-employee coverage under the Occupational Safety and Health Act
