One interesting thing about Pew and education is that originally Pew focused on a very limited number of schools -- both at the university and prep (I use that word intentionally) school level. Since the Trusts, as they are commonly called, have done away with the Puritian privacy of philantropy that they began with, they have found it harder to justify having a national giving program and funding only Bryn Mawr College, one prep school in the Philly suburbs, and tokens of traditionally black colleges. The Pew Trusts publish a lot interesting information on themselves including a booklet on the foundation history and personalities of the founders. I highly recommend it. It can be obtained by calling the Pew Charitable Trusts in Philadelphia or at The Foundation Center library. The foundation center is on the net and the url for Pew is http://www.pewtrusts.com Gina Neff [EMAIL PROTECTED]
