My impression is that the "economic miracles" of East Asia, including that of market-Stalinist China, are based to a large extent on the grossest abuses of the natural environment (not to mention of workers). Yes, I know that the UK and US did likewise when they had their "industrial revolutions" (a.k.a., "takeoffs"). But aren't we a bit closer to global environmental disaster than we were in the 19th century? So these miracles can't last...
