Five public employees unions have voted to stage a one-day general strike throughout Puerto Rico on Oct. 1 to oppose the privatization campaign of Governor Pedro Rossello. In a resolution released September 10, representatives of the five unions declared that "Puerto Rico is not for sale" and called on everyone to support the strike. A broad coalition of trade unions, student groups, social activists, religious leaders and political organizations has been formed to organize the Oct. 1 strike. A large demonstration will be organized in San Juan in which hundreds of thousands of workers are expected to take part, with smaller demonstrations being organized throughout the island. Speaking at a Sept. 10 news conference, Alfonso Benitez of the United Front of Telephone Employees said, "If the government insists on its privatization policy with all the damage it will do the people of Puerto Rico we will continue with demonstrations until the government ends this policy."
