This idea that increased income to workers will kill the company, or the hand that provides the paycheck, is rampant with all this downsizing. In NYNEX, there is constant debate about whether increased overtime will decrease the profitability of the corporation. It's an uphill battle explaining to people that the company still spends less paying out high overtime rates than it does hiring more employees and paying the benefits and pensions which go with more employees. In fact, even relatively conservative economists will tell you that increased wages tends to have the effect of increasing employment--more wages means more spending means an expanding economy. Last year, the Republicans, and their hired hand economists, were screaming that the increase in minimum wage would send the economy into a recession, and here we are with decreased unemployment (of course, I think the decrease in unemployment is due to many other reasons). maggie coleman [EMAIL PROTECTED]
