This idea that increased income to workers will kill the company, or the hand
that provides the paycheck, is rampant with all this downsizing.  In NYNEX,
there is constant debate about whether increased overtime will decrease the
profitability of the corporation.  It's an uphill battle explaining to people
that the company still spends less paying out high overtime rates than it
does hiring more employees and paying the benefits and pensions which go with
more employees.  In fact, even relatively conservative economists will tell
you that increased wages tends to have the effect of increasing
employment--more wages means more spending means an expanding economy.  Last
year, the Republicans, and their hired hand economists, were screaming that
the increase in minimum wage would send the economy into a recession, and
here we are with decreased unemployment (of course, I think the decrease in
