James Madison College of Michigan State University seeks candidates with
demonstrated teaching promise for a three-year, non-tenure stream
appointment in political economy, specialty in applied scholarship with
an
emphasis on policy, institutions, and market-state relations starting
academic year 1998-99. The position requires a solid command of economic
theory and strong command of scholarship on the interface between
economics
and allied disciplines.  Candidates should have strong theoretical
foundations and study applied issues with an emphasis on public policy
(including positive political theories and comparative analysis).

Economists, historians, political scientists, and sociologists are all
urged to apply. The successful candidate will be able to participate in
a
trans-disciplinary academic program and able to make a teaching
contribution in the College's first year gateway courses.  The College
would also expect the application of quantitative methods in teaching.
Because this position will develop courses open to enrollment to
students
from all of the fields in the College and throughout the University,
breadth of training and interest is a plus and an appreciation of
liberal
education is highly desirable.  The standard teaching load is two
courses
per semester.  The position has been funded at the level of beginning
assistant professor, but others may apply.  Women and minority
candidates
are strongly encouraged to apply.

James Madison College is one of Michigan State University's principal
programs in liberal education and its only residential college.
Established in 1967 and with an enrollment limited to 1,000 students, it
strives to combine the ethos of a small, residential college with the
advantages of a large research university.  The curriculum provides
liberal
education in the social sciences with a focus on public affairs.  The
College offers transdisciplinary majors in International Relations,
Political Economy, Political Theory, and Social Relations.  The College
is
noted for high academic standards and attention to the analytical,
writing,
and speaking skills of its students.
