Women and minority candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. James Madison College is one of Michigan State University's principal programs in liberal education and its only residential college. Established in 1967 and with an enrollment limited to 1,000 students, it strives to combine the ethos of a small, residential college with the advantages of a large research university. The curriculum provides liberal education in the social sciences with a focus on public affairs. The College offers transdisciplinary majors in International Relations, Political Economy, Political Theory, and Social Relations. The College is noted for high academic standards and attention to the analytical, writing, and speaking skills of its students.
