While the national inflation rate stays persistently low, reminiscent of the 1950's and 60's, prices have been rising noticeably in recent months for a variety of everyday items - from the fast-food hamburgers to auto maintenance to dental care. (New York Times, Monday, June 22, A1) The increases have been sharp enough in some cases not only to catch people's attention but to provoke their annoyance. But what softens the blow are the prices that are not rising. Most of the essentials - food, gasoline, cars, furniture, appliances, most apparel - are holding steady in price or becoming cheaper. That is why the CPI, which is the average of the prices of thousands of goods and services, has risen by only 1.7 percent over the last year. "The price increases in services have certainly outpaced those for products and commodities in the Consumer Price Index," said Patrick Jackman, at BLS. The percentage changes for the year ended in May for commodities and manufactured goods (up 0.1 percent) and services (up 2.8 percent) and in some of their components are shown in graph form. (page A15) Source of the data cited is BLS. In 1993, college-educated women between 25 and 34 earned 83 percent of what men earned, compared to 74 percent for women aged 35 to 44 and 65 percent for those between 45 and 64. And in growing numbers of occupations, such as the fast growing computer field, women have already achieved virtual equality. Indeed, a significant percentage of working married women now earn more than their husbands. (figures cited in a column on working women by Bruce Bartlett, page A14, The Washington Times). Teenagers in the U.S. find job hunting easy this summer, says Robert D. Hershey, Jr., in a page 1 article in The New York Times (June 21). Writing in South Carolina, Hershey says the benefits of America's lowest unemployment rate in 3 decades are unmistakable there. Heavy doses of foreign investment have helped drive the statewide jobless rate down to 2.5 percent this spring from 4.4 percent a year earlier. But the experience of South Carolina's young job seekers is not replicated everywhere. In New York City, for example, finding a summer job remains a challenge. BLS job data are cited. Finding a summer job is far harder for teenagers in New York City than it is for their peers in most of the nation for reasons ranging from a shortage of lawns to mow to competition from recent immigrants. But economists say the city's summer job market seems to be the best in years. "Retail activity has been one of the biggest growth areas, and it is a sector that tends to hire kids over the summer," said John L. Weiting, regional commission of BLS. He said the growth in retail sales had combined with a strong surge in adult employment - 83,000 jobs were created in the city during the 12 months that ended in May - to create "the backdrop for a greatly improved summer jobs market. (New York Times, June 21, page A22). "The Long-Term Consequences of Nontraditional Employment" by Marianne A. Ferber, professor of economics, University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, Illinois and Jane Waldfogel, assistant professor of social work and public affairs, School of Social Work, Columbia University, New York, New York and published in the May Monthly Labor Review is reprinted in the Daily Labor Report (page E-6). Earnings of men who once worked in temporary jobs tended to be lower than that of other men, while women did not appear to suffer this wage deficit, according to this article. The authors find that former part-time work had little effect on either wages or benefits among man. Women who once worked in temporary or part-time jobs actually had higher than average wages and nearly average benefits ------ =_NextPart_000_01BD9EB1.D1DA7320 b3NvZnQgTWFpbC5Ob3RlADEIAQWAAwAOAAAAzgcGABcACgASACUAAgA1AQEggAMADgAAAM4HBgAX AAoAEgAoAAIAOAEBCYABACEAAABEQjBCODkyNjc2MEFEMjExODg4RTAwMjBBRjlDMDMwOAAEBwEE gAEAEQAAAEJMUyBEYWlseSBSZXBvcnQAkAUBDYAEAAIAAAACAAIAAQOQBgBMDQAAHAAAAEAAOQBw Gl7QsZ69AR4AcAABAAAAEQAAAEJMUyBEYWlseSBSZXBvcnQAAAAAAgFxAAEAAAAWAAAAAb2esTlU JokL3Ap2EdKIjgAgr5wDCAAAHgAxQAEAAAANAAAAUklDSEFSRFNPTl9EAAAAAAMAGkAAAAAAHgAw QAEAAAANAAAAUklDSEFSRFNPTl9EAAAAAAMAGUAAAAAAAgEJEAEAAACLCgAAhwoAAN8QAABMWkZ1 F4cS//8ACgEPAhUCpAPkBesCgwBQEwNUAgBjaArAc2V0bjIGAAbDAoMyA8UCAHDccnESIAcTAoB9 CoAIzx8J2QKACoENsQtgbmcxyDAzMwr0bGkBwQtGIxLyAdAgQkwF8ERBCElMWQfwRVBPUqRULAXQ T04ZIFkZ4IBKVU5FIDIyGeBgMTk5ODoKhQqFUlhlZ2kCIAdAIABwZAQgcwGQdGUgdW50ZW0LUG8G wAnwBUByUx0xBCB2aQAgdQdAbPh5IHcEkB1SEbEW4AmAZiALgAXQYXkZ4BzSdPxoZR8gBaACMAuA ClAg4LRvIADAdBGwIOIgFMDnB+AeRBHxIGUKwBegBJB7ICIiYnkjgRngGOIVMHCzFNEEIChEC3Af EUwBoH8FsRxAJTIZ4AqwH/AZEC3IMSkuG2xXaAMQIbH/InEckCFwHIMLgBaxKSIeM/UdAnkEIHAE kACQHRAeAW8fESKhGeAVMG0LgAQAYxkeAm9mIlMbEDUwJ/sEIBzSNi1hJsEFECxwBCD1EcB2HVBi CeEeMAQAC4D6ZyjwbyFwLHABoB8RIDHvFTAscwRgAjBoBCACEAXAbmEekArACJB0HyAswWVxLtBy eWQgcCAgHUBt9wQhCfAy4HMiQDFwA2EiU/JmM8B0LQIQBHAuoQbQzwhwH/AR4CHCYXUh0wuAfytB AHAscCHCDbACMByhY6kKwGUuM/AoB8JZBbD8ayAHYxnhAiAy4RphHXH9GsNBJ1A40CJxC4AFACOA bxHwLpoz0ArAcCNwL8B19mciQCAxcwNwHVA30DtC+y/BLLBuHxEh0TfQIiIq4PpvC1BlLXICQB4B KfI1cIcFQCHRE5Bvdm9rKKO3HrAcwS/AeTbiOBFCQDH+dxHABUA9IAGACfA10SJx/wJgIrE34SJT LkUg8EKRQ9L/PdIvVDgROVAdECy2B5AR8N8hYQdAM2o1ARngZzPABvDdC4BlGeA30S4RZghwAwD3 HtAVMCCRcAtQBzA28S4RfwRgRkFKMTfhAyEzlkPSaM0G8GQvgisxYWQwUy5D/yywBcAvAAWgLCEv oBGwI4D/KuE4ETqgQpEEAEJhPkEicfhDUEkZ4EJwLmA80UMkfy7BHkAnASzFLkUswwhgc7sc0VLT ZzUBLYQR8HIeoN9KoxHABCAvUS8hYjJBPiL4MS43KtIsdDKhIlQ0sfskYzgRIjqiTbQ66DzyVKW/ LqQscAAgC3EfEQhgdAqwPyxwINJGMDSBBbFAkWR1/mMlYRzSTmEEYTMgCJBZk7NQMwIgc3UHgAXA UE3Dwkkc4GV4LCIdAAtwXRzwUB0wLlE4wEoA0Gv/A4EgkQVAGOFPQ0QxVqQm8v8ftDFkJDY8cQ2w IBYxc11q+xzSA4F1NKBc4EnhHPBT9MQodTxgMC4xVoY6gONUWmdjMi44Z+w89izE/0FBTmElMB2A AjAtgR9hM9B/IrADoCAxCcBKMCJAMYFt7TgQKCbjOmA1OoAGAAhh/03iLNQy4AGQITAzISARBCDv YZMbbF+AGwIzSQEG8CiQvR/wLQmAXNAdMRzwdz0xT0ABEgAfQC8hMjUcwzPONCNyHYAc8DgzVogs 0P9Cc3NidMRyEh2gN+Eg0SHg/jd0oFaWMYJzRCbxdHF0MP0h0TR0oC2jdDB4Glv0c6bSNHQ0NjQ4 EUFqdAnAPyKwL4Ne0C8ANcEswW9j/mNngCkTLhFewCIxVUE0Zu99R2uyNjAj0WYIkEywUKH/c1Mu swdAOxFNUQDQKHAykbcc8B6lI3BxHuEzIHk4Ee9fgnbiMcAAkGcDAIFwN9C/HhFiOXXiOKEvggDA cgiB/3MmL8AH4HTCMQFD4wORQRS6aFNQYlNyOBKBcGdJ4f8EIG/leRFyIl7QA6AqAYcWs3NFHyBC clzQHVBCCsBvK3ASACa2OmA0GeA6olf/M8EvgSHQA6AHYydgM/AbbJ5UCeEm8TXBJAVVLmGx44Fw HOFqb2KJ8SFiL6D/OyFQEk/BXsFe4X8xKqIIAOt+AQVARDgQSCrxIQEaYf9PMBngi6Mm42fQjhEu YCiRfyAxOqI4XCWAOdQnUTPwV/8FEJPDIDFusSDwUGAKwEiy/mEZ4JYllSRDQwnwDcAzIP1S00Fe 4YXRLXEioQeQBUD/HX8gInVABYFNQGXSH2MsIP0dEWswISijN/OWIC7AHyD+ZFwRUtMxgUEwhZAg IS7Qbx0QHfMusyEAbCrgHPBk/wUQLtEiYh0TA/ANsJNCKJD/BBEqM6LQbNEh0WmQemiUZP8uQS+R NBN8oHf4McBj5COU+0IFRqN4KuEIkDbyLMGbHL0tcXkIYC+Rk1IR8GVA4P+SEj20JREXoHLkMpNC cKIU+3GhOFdDhHFJYQWxX7A1UP8/IUlhkxEvgoVRlMOTQywB/wtxLYFi0nJRH+E4EBjik1Lvb5ND 0m/jJ31Gsw+TYU/B/zSgieELEYFCY3KRurE7iUT/MyC5I2N0QUEq4JIFSvMsxf8pBDFzOxJeoR4x FuCpJ4VR/0yQWuFR5AtgbNA10wRgB+D/PmJrwRIAXcG+4jQiMKUHcP8sIG0xbCFCBQWRL8ChQiMh 9zLxImJv4XktcbOZh5FA4P9CoQngM1Eh0S8AnNVGQSAx+yRyinEiHEBa8RyxXOClcN+7wlUyLwNr 8Sy2YoWAYyH/gESbQTfhM8AglLxUhVEFkP8h0FdCQpErQVORIdEocB9hH4dAU5JXJpS1X+VKb2j1 A6BMOBBXQTCTwiviHGX/XWIEASnyLMFhk5YgX/QiYv/MlTBzyfNTYKbBLqFdQ8wQ/3TyA/DM0h0B A2BM4jWCi5M9XMBsI2EdqDOHdTAsMP/aoJNCT9EfUjsCi2XGBjdQ/whxL5Es8xIgMRVEw2Q7M4f/ PmLbk1hQQ0Ng4aVQPxAxdf8JwR0wMEIdoEChIAGzmAQg/8dkbdE4Xpm1joYa0CduWFT6TNgBLZGg bbBeg4QhrGK9UtNOAiEeQF2yHINFHad/X+BV0SBgByFBgG4xOBBG/wSQfgEuIizARuEFsTJixSR6 Yy4RVQMAMqEAkDI0SdsfAAuAbwQAGeBDNUEKsPmFgS1V69AAcJvh7pYcw79g0Dnxj4BMsAIQH/Bs IJH/04EdEYYC7Eo9IG/gHKGHEv8cw4EQAmAuYBzADdALcElCvlMRsDUAAyCss/OzVzih/+8RjALM EDHA7bgZ4DhW+Dj/9EiWUdvnZMI5USDwJdkeoP8H0U/BJRGpEdvJJa8FQG306EUtNpCCRXTRL4FS 0/9zYkJwIeACIDcBhxLb1R2R/wWwCsAfINrjzvJ3hMhhnoL/zoMkEkKRflKh8nZSUKMokf9zREzA HPA90koxY/Ih0V7A/w3QVzNPwibyDbEuYDMgIJH/fpD+MEzDIdGUY5fFYcU2If/A0TFhkxJEw22S I9EXUTTQ/yFwPUH0A9aShGGOMSNwB3H/XOCMUtIhBOIIElLRTiKdRf81UNgCYRGaMnNTAK8Bulxi NX3mMAIAGuAAAwDxPwkEAAADAP0/5AQAAAMAJgAAAAAAAwA2AAAAAAACAUcAAQAAADAAAABjPVVT O2E9IDtwPUJMUztsPURDUENTTUFJTDEtOTgwNjIzMTQxODM3Wi03MzEzMgAeADhAAQAAAA0AAABS SUNIQVJEU09OX0QAAAAAHgA5QAEAAAANAAAAUklDSEFSRFNPTl9EAAAAAEAABzCApVzQsZ69AUAA CDAgc9rRsZ69AR4APQABAAAAAQAAAAAAAAAeAB0OAQAAABEAAABCTFMgRGFpbHkgUmVwb3J0AAAA AB4ANRABAAAAQAAAADxFMTZFRUE0Q0U5QzdEMDExOUFFNDAwNjA5NzA1Q0Q4ODY1MjVBNUBkY3Bj c21haWwxLnBzYi5ibHMuZ292PgALACkAAAAAAAsAIwAAAAAAAwAGEASwHFoDAAcQpwwAAAMAEBAA AAAAAwAREAAAAAAeAAgQAQAAAGUAAABCTFNEQUlMWVJFUE9SVCxNT05EQVksSlVORTIyLDE5OTg6 UkVHSU9OQUxBTkRTVEFURVVORU1QTE9ZTUVOVFJBVEVTVklSVFVBTExZV0VSRVVOQ0hBTkdFRElO TUFZLEFORFRIAAAAAAIBfwABAAAAQAAAADxFMTZFRUE0Q0U5QzdEMDExOUFFNDAwNjA5NzA1Q0Q4 ODY1MjVBNUBkY3Bjc21haWwxLnBzYi5ibHMuZ292PgBImw== ------ =_NextPart_000_01BD9EB1.D1DA7320--
