Dear Pen-lers,
Perhaps some of you have been following the on-and-off news
story about the Miss World pageant being held in Bangalore, India (this
coming Sat.) There has been a vigorous outcry against the event by an unsual
collection of political and other groups - feminists, farmers, nationalists,
Hinduists, an assortment of populist and other social organizations. One
person has already committed suicide in protest of the event by setting
himself on fire and 500 more have threatened to self-immolate if the event
is actually held.

On being interviewed by ABC news, the Indian beauty contestant in the
pageant opined that she did not understand what the hullabaloo was about
because the event, afterall, would attract the attention of world and "bring
in lost of foreign investment." Notions?
