Nonmanufacturing business activity showed continued growth for the month
of June, although at a slower rate than in the previous months in 1998,
according to a National Association of Purchasing Management report....

U.S. companies reported 54,914 job cuts in June, a 99 percent increase
from job cuts in May, according to the outplacement firm Challenger,
Gray & Christmas.  Job cuts for the first six months of this year
totaled 270,443, a 46 percent increase over the first half of last

The national economic impact of the United Auto Workers' strike that has
crippled General Motors Corp. should be small unless the work stoppage
drags on for months, analysts say.  While economists disagree on the
short-term impact on growth of U.S. gross domestic product, they concur
that in the long term much of the effect will be transient.  In other
words, some of the cuts to second and third quarter GDP growth caused by
the strike will be made up in the fourth quarter of 1998 and the first
quarter of 1999.  "The rule of thumb is that strikes don't matter [to
the general economy]," says Donald Ratajczak, director of the Economic
Forecasting Center at the Georgia State University in Atlanta.  There
have been exceptions, however, Ratajczak said.  The steel strike of 1959
probably helped cause a recession, and the GM strike of 1970 "was what
tilted the economy into recession," he said....  (Daily Labor Report,

Economists predict the brunt of Asia's economic crisis will hit the U.S.
in the next six to nine months, according to a Wall Street Journal
survey (page A2).  Most of the survey's participants believe U.S.
companies will slow production and cut employment, though the economy is
unlikely to contract....  

Faced with a flourishing economy and a growing number of young people
who go straight to college, the military hasn't struggled this hard to
meet enlistment goals since the draft ended 25 years ago.  The Air Force
will have 900 new pilots-in-training this year but will lose 1,700
fliers who are tired of frequent and unexpected deployments to places
such as the Persian Gulf and Bosnia.  Highly trained enlisted
specialists also are leaving at higher rates, because of the military's
long hours and relatively low pay....  The services offer an enticing
list of perks, including cash bonuses, money for college, tuition loan
