part of the hook is that it gives PK a chance to lead the NY TIMES
readership (and a lot of orthodox economists) a chance to have a group hug
and to sneer at the unwashed masses who don't understand the Truth.
On his pay, PK at point complained that he's earning less from his
twice-a-week NYT column than he did from his monthly SLATE and FORTUNE
columns. Prestige is the nonpecuniary component. When I knew him well, he
almost worshiped the NYT.
(heck, give me US MAGAZINE any day, with headlines like "Is Oprah Happy?")
