How to reply to a man who thinks that, if you check out a person on his/her institution's web site (in my case, the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague), you know everything you need to know to categorise them, let alone insult them? Frankly, Valis has a real problem. I didn't end up here as a soft option; and I've spent alot of money on legal fees to prevent my institution from pushing me out for political reasons. That, of course, isn't mentioned on the ISS web-page. It also doesn't mention my new book, The Malthus Factor: Poverty, Politics and Population in Capitalist Development (Zed Books), which was not written with the idea of securing a cosy tenured position somewhere in the United States. And I don't have a professorship, and I don't smoke a pipe. And, hey, look who's flourishing all the rhetoric here? ross
