The "underclass" is a classic case of a lot of people being defined as "the 
other." But as far as I can tell, the "underclass" is basically synonymous 
with the "poor" (though the latter has an official government definition).

I think that though the media's fuzzy definition of the "underclass" 
includes mostly those "of color" -- i.e., those whose color isn't pinkish 
-- many of the poor folks _are_ pinkish in color. In fact, if I remember my 
stats (Doug?), most poor people have skin colors that are seen as "white." 
So the media's image of the poor "underclass" isn't accurate.
