There are reports of widespread anti-US protests all over China. Some cities are reporting increasingly serious violence against US consulates which required calling out Chinese soldiers to maintain order. The waves of protest are not likely to subside soon, but instead are expected to escalate. The prospect of a consulate facility being occupied by protesters or some Americans getting hurt or killed in the streets are increasingly real. If that happens, the Chinese government will be put in a very difficult dilemma. Public anger is building and the Chinese government may not be able to take a hard line against popular patriotism to maintain order. With June 4 anniversary approaching, the complexities of domestic politics makes the outcome of any mass protest unpredictable. The pressure on the government is extremely intense. The news that the Chinese embassy was hit by 3 laser guided missiles fired from three separate direction, has rendered NATO's lame explanation of technical failure inoperative. The excuse that the embassy was misidentified by the use of old maps is laughable. NATO repeatee claim of the surgical approach meant that a map identifying all foreign embassies should have been standard operational proceedure. Unless Washington take drastic step to calm Chinese mass anger, peace may not last beyond the end of June. Henry C.K. Liu
