BEIJING (August 25, 2000 1:12 p.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com) - Workers
at a joint U.S.-Chinese packaging company held a group of foreign managers
hostage for more than a day in a feud over layoffs, the company said Friday.

Up to seven foreign managers were held at the factory, located in the
northern port city of Tianjin, from Wednesday morning until Thursday night,
when they were released, said a spokeswoman for MCP Industries Ltd., a
joint venture between Ball Asia Pacific Ltd. and a Chinese partner
identified only as Wanhua.

Parent company Ball Corp. is located in Bloomfield, Colo.

The spokeswoman said she did not know the exact number of hostages taken or
their nationalities.

The joint venture was to be dissolved after the Chinese side decided to
withdraw their investment, and Ball wanted to move production to another
facility and lay off some workers, she said.

Company officials are investigating the incident.

Ball Asia Pacific Ltd. operates 16 joint ventures, including three in
Tianjin, and with its partners is the leading maker of beverage containers
in China, according to the company's Web site.
