When my wife used to work for the Arthrititis Foundation, one of the things
she did was to help those with cancer get services, like free
transportation to get physical therapy. Other not-for-profit organizations
(the American Cancer Society) may offer similar services and your
mother-in-law may have some illness that qualifies. The government may also
offer some services.
(The AF wasn't extremely interested in that (since fundraising had higher
priority), but they still do it.)
