Newspaper articles repeatedly cite a figure of 40 per cent for the
proportion of households in the US that own shares.

Does anyone know where this figure comes from?

The report 'Share ownership 1998' which is posted on the NYSE web page
shows that in 1995 69 million people owned shares either directly or
indirectly through pension or mutual funds. This would give a slightly
different result.
