Slogging through L.A. traffic this morning, I found myself behind a bus with a big sign advertising "First Federal Bank of California." It said: "personal banking. genuine smiles." Advertising genuine smiles?? I can imagine the memo coming from on high: "if you smile at one of FFB's customers make absolutely sure that your smile is genuine. If we see any non-genuine smiles, heads will roll..." In addition, the sign had a picture of a woman's smile, though her eyes and the top of her head weren't shown... a new form of objectification...
