but both sides meddled in the periphery of the other, as when the US 
supported Solidarity in Poland (ending up by corrupting it) and the USSR 
helped the MPLA rebels in Angola (encouraging a different kind of 
corruption). The standard was set with Hungary  in 1956, where the US first 
encouraged rebellion against the regime and then refused to support it, in 
order to keep the peace with the USSR. It's a little like the relationship 
between Oceana and Eurasia that Orwell described in _1984_.
