Speaking of water, PEN-L'ers should investigate Donald Worster's "Rivers of
Empire" which examines the question of dams, irrigation, agribusiness,
rivers, etc. in enormous depth. He is the author of about 8 or 9 books on
ecology, the most recent of which is a biography of John Wesley Powell
titled "A River Running West". Powell explored the Grand Canyon after a
stint in the Civil War where he lost an arm in combat. There is a good PBS
documentary on Powell as well.
