Now that the Aryan Nations compound in Hayden Lake, ID. has been sold
(followers relocated to where Aryan Nations $bag, computer industry tycoon,
Vincent Bertolini, lives in Sandpoint, ID.) I hope that county starts to
recover from the damage that the Racist compound represented and symbolized.
But, the surrounding community, was not universally supportive, esp. when
the yearly conventions occurred and a March through downtown by the Skins
and Neo-Nazis and Christian Identity loons happened. Last # of years, in
fact, many locals joined along with anti-racists from elsewhere to protest.
Not that Idaho isn't full of old time conservatives and lotsa John Birch
Society members, but to say the whole county is one big Racist, Reactionary
Swamp I think is a bit of a slam. For a balanced view by a Idaho native see,
"In God's Country: The Patriot Movement and the Pacific Northwest " by David
Neiwert, Washington State University Press
Pub. Date: April 1999.
