Gore already was making political news. On Wednesday night, he told a New York audience that he had "reluctantly come to the conclusion" that the only solution to the "impending crisis" in health care was a "single-payer national health insurance plan" for all Americans. That marks a sharp break with his past position, pushing him sharply to the left on what could be an important issue in the next presidential campaign.
Back to the question of timing. As a lot people have pointed out, this would have don a lot more good if it had been done during the 2000 election. But it would still have done a heck of a lot of good if it had been announced a few weeks earlier when a single payer plan was on the *Oregon Ballot* - this month.
