Absolutely.  That's why the current coalition is called UPA (United
Progressive Alliance), which includes the CPM.   I don't mean to say that
the left (if you mean CPM) is corrupt in the usual sense.  Quite the
opposite most left leaders from the CPM, while powerful and influential,
have not enriched themselves.  The corruption has been uninterrupted by
members of the state (politicians and the bureaucracy, the police force,
etc.), which supposedly had the mandate to bring about a socially-conscious
development.  What has happened under the CPM is that they fostered a labor
aristocracy, which has neither organized the unorganized workers nor have
they allowed employment generating investments.   Even in Kerala, where the
CPM, has done well socially, their employment situation is pretty grim.
Fortunately, Malaylis (Keralites) have been able to emigrate to other parts
of India and abroad and thus sustain their families through remittance
income.
