It hasn't really got any better. The world of blogs is now getting
stuffed up with a) horrible careerists trying to get a job on a
mainstream newspaper or magazine b) horrible careerists who have managed
to get a spot on the website of a mainstream newspaper or magazine.
About the best thing you can say about them is that as a feeder for the
media industry, they don't have quite so much of the obvious social
mobility problems associated with unp-aid internships (although please
don't ask me to name any widely-known working class bloggers under the
age of 30). I tend to think of the day Maxspeak shut up shop as being
basically the Altamont of blogs; after that, we all tried to carry on,
but deep down we knew it was over. bestdd

I don't mind the self-promotion as much as the fact that
it's all unidirectional. When I was blogging my policy was
to try and foster mutual support, but the big shots (sic)
were usually not interested. I would get these emails
from The Nation, Z, etc. inviting me to publicize them, but
when I sent notes saying how about supporting me too,
the silence was deafening. One reason I soured on
blogging.

No kidding. His status updates are an endless exercise in self-
promotion. I'm so bad at being petit bourgeois.
