Another comment on the vzlan election; incidentally, compared to the Dec
constitutional reform referendum, the Chavists got over a million more
votes than the 'si', and the oppos got about 300,000 less than the 'no'./m

Chavez: Socialists Record Electoral Victory
CARACAS, November 24.— President Hugo Chavez said Monday that
Venezuela's Bolivarian Revolution won a major victory in Sunday's
regional elections taking more than 75 percent of the governors posts
and 80 percent of the city halls.
Speaking in a press conference broadcast nationwide from the
Miraflores presidential palace, Chavez noted the large turnout and
called on the opposition to be honest and respect the popular vote.
Come down off that cloud, the opposition didn't win. The revolution
and Venezuela won, as did the country's institutions and constitution,
and above all, the people, he said.
We recognize the limited victories of some opposition leaders, but we
also tell them to administrate their relative successes with calm,
said Chavez.
Throughout the Republic we received more votes than in previous
elections and it has been demonstrated that there is a profound
consolidation of the Revolution and the opposition can't feel totally
secure in any political space.
Chavez said that the revolutionary forces increased by 20 percent
since last December.
In its first test at the polls, the newly formed United Socialist
Party of Venezuela (PSUV) obtained 5,504,000 votes while the
opposition managed 4,280,000, noted Chavez.
We won 80 of the 100 most populated municipalities and 18 of the 24
state capitals, as well as important cities in Maracay, Maturin,
Valencia, Barquisimeto and others, said Chavez. (PL)
