I meant 30s (thirties), not '40s -- though Imight add here that to some
extent the depression didn't completely end with Pearl Harbor. The
government began buying large quantities of food products in 1940 -- but
the salary my mother received as rural school teacher was still
inadequate as late as 1942-3 to allow her to give me a whole $1 a week
allowance when I shifted from a rural school to 9th grade in Benton
Harbor. Only in the '50s was there a really radical improvement for many
people.
