Yes. Ken Silverstein did some great work on this in the early Counterpunch. They accumulate huge pots of money which they rarely spend on legal work - but they never stop with the fundraising. They refuse to touch death penalty cases because they're too controversial. Instead, they whip up the Nazi/Klan threat to scare northern liberals into writing checks.
An LBO subscriber once told me that he applied for a job with the SPLC and went for an interview at bossman Morris Dees's place. He said it looked like a pre-Civil War plantation, complete with black men working on the vast lawn.
