The US/British/Russian war was *in no sense* a "fight against
Hitler." On the contrary, the Allied political strategy--the
Unconditional Surrender doctrine, reinforced by the savage retribution
against the German population promised by Morgenthau and Vansittart--
was designed to keep Hitler in power until Germany could be occupied
by the Allied armies. The military strategy of area bombing--killing
the German working class but sparing the factories and the death
camps--was aimed at this end exclusively.
Even the military tactics were subordinated to that end, as shown by
the successful targeting of Rommel, the military centerpiece of the
July 1944 plot (of which Allied intelligence was well aware) against
Hitler. The real enemy for Churchill and Roosevelt and Stalin was the
European working class, the real threat was a repetition of
1917-1919. The real preoccupation of all the imperialists, from
first to last, was that stated in the ultimate dialogue, on the eve of
war, between Hitler and the French ambassador to Berlin:
Coulondre--"If we go to war, the only winner will be Trotsky"
Hitler--"I know, I know"

kindling in measures and going out in measures."
