Just got back from two weeks in Israel, full of Zionist spirit. First time for
me in 30 years.

In any event, read the Al-Jazeera article regarding the "right" type of
"resistance," and what is missing in the article is any clarity regarding the
goal of the resistance. There is no discussion of practicality, or of linking
methods and ends. It is almost Sorelian, in that "resistance" is an end in
itself.

Is the goal to convince the Israelis that a new independent state would not be
a threat? Then I would think shooting rockets at civilian targets from land
you control would not be tactically savvy, even if you could justify it morally
in the abstract. On the other hand, if your goal is to communicate that the
State of Israel is inherently illegitimate and you will never agree to a peace
agreement that acknowledges Jewish rule over any part of the area, then your
tactics will be different. I think Hamas has been very effective in
communicating the latter to Israelis, while Abbas/Fayad is working diligently
on the former.

I can't read Mr. Shikaki's mind, but he appears very caught up in the
righteousness of his cause as opposed to thinking pragmatically.
