my wife has been in and out of the hospital for about a month (don't
ask!) and I've noticed something. The hospital is the "Ronald Reagan
UCLA Medical Center," which is very good despite its name. It's much
better than the old UCLA hospital, where our son was born many years
ago. Anyway, the point is that there are not enough hospital rooms, so
that my wife had to wait and wait and wait for a room each of the
three times she was admitted. The first time, there was no reason for
the wait at all, since they knew should would need a room after the
operation! Why the lack of rooms? the reason seems to be is that the
hospital went upscale: all rooms are private (not shared with others)
and there are a bunch of luxury suites (which I haven't seen). It's
like Comiskey Park in Chicago (the home of the (once) world champion
White Sox). When they built the new stadium, they added a bunch of sky
boxes for the rich and corporate -- and reduced the number of seats
for regular people.

the economic reason for the shortage of rooms is the same as the
reason for the name of the hospital: it reflects growing economic
inequality in the US.
