why ask? it's okay to make politically unlikely proposals -- which at
this point in US history includes even fiscal stimulus (unless perhaps
it involves massive tax cuts for the rich and/or increased militarism)
-- but it's good to know that one is doing so. It's like utopian
thinking, which is usually good for telling a plausible story of how
things could be better in society. But those who think in a utopian
way should be clear what the political & economic obstacles exist that
block its realization.

If there were a mass movement pushing the government to shorten the
work-year, it might happen. But if there were a mass movement of that
sort, it could accomplish much more.
