Not all American movies are crap. In the last ten years there were some good
ones:

I don't disagree. My pick would be The Road. Even so, The Road can not
exculpate itself from a possible way out.

But nevermind. Did you watch The Return? My interest of course is personal. I
had three fathers where I experienced almost every turn of this movie in the
tortured struggle to adapt to yet another man in mom's complex psyche. In the
end, she was the engima. What was she looking for? What did she want of these
diverse men who seemed to have nothing common?

They all disappeared in one way or another and I was surprised at the loss,
because I didn't expect to lose what I thought was a life enemy. It turned out
they added to my life experience in ways I never expected. So it was some of
the evocation the movie brought out.

It's very easy to turn this tale into Oedipus. Notice there is not a single
sound stage shot. The landscape becomes part of the character, or a character.
Russia is immense and it shows. This is the entrance into a world of possible
metaphor, as in The Brothers Karamazov. I don't really want to go there,
because it seems unlikely, but it is a potential dimension. The father is
teaching them how to cope with the land, great lakes, and the forces of nature
and he is quite good at it.
