My sources say that ancient Egypt used barter. I think that's because
the peasants paid tribute in kind and received payment in kind for
building pyramids, etc.

In general however, I'd agree that barter and markets can't co-exist
for long, since barter is so inefficient (high transactions costs).
Markets require money and/or credit.
