Perhaps they consider Harper's stimulus spending that helped us survive the 
recession to be socialist. He needed it to pass his budget actually.

in the degraded version of English typically spoken in the U.S., the
word "socialism" means any government meddling in the mythical free
market  (which is assumed to persist without government help).
