That was my conclusion also. 8,000 rupees a month is like a joke. Today, I went to a nearby grocery store - a bit on the upscale side, only well-to-do Indians go there - and bought three packs of cheese, two packs of salami, two packs of pasta, one Chilean and one Indian wine. I paid 4,600 rupees. Above that grocery store, there is a Jewish/Middle Eastern restaurant and ate my dinner there: some hummus, a lamb dish, a glass of Merlot and a pot of tea for 2,000 rupees. My total spending at that trip today was 6,600 rupees and there was nothing fancy about what I did, at least, by the western standards.
