executive boardrooms to design studios, with assembly lines having very little
to do with it. ...

It's not errors.It was deliberate executive decision since at least the 1960s
when imports came into the US market.
When I was a kid I used to follow cars and every year Detroit made shit and the
Europeans didn't. They were smaller, less powered, but better made and got
better miles.
As a worker, I know when I am putting together shit and when I am working on a
jewel. My whole attitude changes. I assume US workers knew the difference.
