TV is free, too (or at least it was before cable) but everyone
complained about the ads. It's the American Way!

I guess you could say that the ads are the price we pay for the "free"
services. But they are a pain in the butt, especially since most of
them are so inane and intellect-insulting. They're also the wave of
the future: the neoliberal policy revolution has pushed
not-for-profits (including the university I work at) to advertise.
There's some city that has thought seriously of selling ads on cop
cars... I don't think ads would have the same role when we create
socialism.

BTW, my family has connections with the advertising industry. One of
my grandfathers had an ad agency (until his partner ran off with the
Rolodex), while an uncle allegedly invented soft margarine (and how to
sell it) for an ad agency. My dad worked for the Audit Bureau of
Circulations, which checks the numbers used to set newspaper
advertising prices (etc.)
