TV is free, too (or at least it was before cable) but everyone complained about the ads. It's the American Way! I guess you could say that the ads are the price we pay for the "free" services. But they are a pain in the butt, especially since most of them are so inane and intellect-insulting. They're also the wave of the future: the neoliberal policy revolution has pushed not-for-profits (including the university I work at) to advertise. There's some city that has thought seriously of selling ads on cop cars... I don't think ads would have the same role when we create socialism. BTW, my family has connections with the advertising industry. One of my grandfathers had an ad agency (until his partner ran off with the Rolodex), while an uncle allegedly invented soft margarine (and how to sell it) for an ad agency. My dad worked for the Audit Bureau of Circulations, which checks the numbers used to set newspaper advertising prices (etc.) -- Jim Devine / If you're going to support the lesser of two evils, at the very least you should know the nature of that evil. _______________________________________________ pen-l mailing list [email protected] https://lists.csuchico.edu/mailman/listinfo/pen-l
