I sent an e-mail to the pbulic editor at the NY Times asking why the Times is using the descriptor "replacement referees" instead of the time honored "scabs".
To my astonishment I got a response. The full text is "Because that's what they are, replacement referees." Of course my purpose wasn't honorable, but a 7th-grader working at the Times is a surprise.
