My first impression. Bad german accents and too many cigarettes. The prefect period costumes, hair and dress styles, excellent color, and apparently high production values make me worry. There will be a lot of talk, but I have to wonder if the deep cynicism that Arendt held toward the Zionists will show up as much more than an argument and press scandal. It will take a lot of insight and courage to have Arendt look at one of her detractors and say, Well, now you see why Zionism was Germany's gift to the Jews. She wrote that in one of her letters to Jaspers. Then too, how do you make a movie out of a social philosopher, well political theorist? The Eichmann Trial was the big dramatic moment. Fat nasty little Leo lead the charge and march to get her fired from Uni Chicago. I will certainly watch it as soon as it hits cd's and there is a cheap on-line version. Here is the real Arendt in an interview with Guther Grass, in German with English subtitles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsoImQfVsO4&NR=1&feature=endscreen In the opening she goes on about not being a philosopher and the distinction between man as a thinking being and man as an active being. I don't believe in the distinction because I got a lot of fun out of being both/and.
