I think the article was RED-BAITING. And it might very well convince a number of blue collar Democrats to sit out the election -- some might even vote for Lhota (sp?).
Upper west side rich people might already be interested in voting for Lhota .... (And who knows if the general election electorate might demonstrate a "Bradley effect" -- (saying you'll vote for a black person but then not ---) -- DeBlasio isnt' black but he's got a black family ....) So plenty of people might think that he's a radical and (almost) black person.
