Growing up, a good friend of mine was the son of the president of the Seafarers
International Union, Paul Hall. (The SIU was the anti-communist alternative to
the National Maritime Union.) He claimed to have co-invented the container ship
along with the head of SeaLand, a major early container shipper. Merchant
mariners don't like longshoremen, or didn't when I spent a few summers as one,
because they stole everything on the ship that wasn't nailed down. So putting
longshoremen out of work wasn't a concern of the SIU.
