The standard historical narrative holds that Pizarro overran the Inka because of superior weaponry and the ravages of smallpox. That is, to guns, germs, and steel (specifically, a steel-based centralized economy). Guns, Germs, and Steel accepts that view, but it’s actually a strangely misleading title. What Diamond really wants to isolate are not the immediate causes, but the ultimate ones: why did some cultures end up with guns, germs, and steel before others?
